Wanton Noodles -DIY

Posted by HoWeiSek | Chinese,Entertainment,Food From Home | Monday 9 March 2009 3:00 pm

We don’t have wanton noodles here in Nova Scotia.  If you ask the Chinese restaurant for wanton noodles.. the servers would look at you .. as if you were speaking in Greek or they have this disbelieve look.  I kid you not.  So sometimes, when i managed to get some Wanton noodles from the Asian grocery store up in the city… ( 4 hrs away) .. i freeze them.. and use them only when i need them.  Yes, I cook my own wanton noodles.. that we have back home.  What to do right..??  “ma sie lok dia hung” – direct translation – horse die, come down and walk.  Ever since migrating to Canada – in the name of LOVE – what was i thinking right..??  *slap forehead*, i learn to improvise a lot or DIY if i am craving for something.  It may not be as professional .. nor taste the same.. but this is as good as it gets.

Ok.. so everyone asked.. how come you donch show what you are cooking..??  like step by step with the recipe.  Well.. really no recipes.. i just “agak-agak” .. test and try.. to the taste i like.  But for Wanton noodles.. you need cold water.. to rinse out your noodles.. after you’ve boiled it for a few mins.  But donch forget to loosen the noodles first.

Then i prepare my own wanton noodle sauce.  I put some sesame oil, some pepper, some ketchup, some sambal oelek, some oyster sauce and some dark soya sauce.  Everything agak – agak .. but must make sure it covers and coat all your noodles.

Then i prepare what i want for meat and vegies for my wanton noodles.. and over here in Canada.. a quarter chicken cost like $2.99 .. and we take a few days to finish it.  We are not huge meat lovers.

So you put the noodles in boiling water for a few mins.. take it out.. put it into the bowl of cold water.. take it out.. and put it back into the boiling water for a min or so.. and drain.  Put them into your plate of DIY sauce and mix them all around.   And put in your chicken.. and just about anything you want to eat.  I used to make my own wanton.. but it’s time consuming.. so i only eat them once in a while.

A plate of DIY wanton noodles.. to enjoy with my shows.  I can’t watch a show without eating something good.  What about you ..??

Guess What’s In The Slow Cooker

Posted by HoWeiSek | Chinese,Food From Home,Slow Cooking | Thursday 5 March 2009 12:54 pm

Can you guessed what i cooked the other day..??  it’s not often that i can get to cook food from home and once i do get ahold of the ingredient .. i try to cook them quickly.  Why..??  because the Asian grocery store up in Halifax  – the city .. tries to give me the worst or about to get rot stuff .. if she can.  If i am not there to pick up my own food.. like i send a courier to get it .. or a customer/friend pick them up for me.. it always happens.

I am always at her mercy.. so i don’t complained at all.  Beggars can’t be choosers right..??  i take what i can get .. and make the best outta it.  Can you guess what soup i made..??   I use the slow cooker a lot .. because it is very convenient.. as i have to be at the store for 6hrs or more at times.. to help the “ang moh” .. and of course, i also have my kid to look after .. full time.  And i have my online work to do – therefore making soup this way is a lot easier .. and definitely healthier for me and my kid.  The “ang moh” donch drink this kinda soup.

I bring them to work.. to eat with rice.. and tofu for my kid and myself.  My kid loves eating this way .. and never touches burgers .. or pizzas .. like most “ang moh” kids does.  But she eats french fries though. .and loves them with a passion.

Home made tartar sauce are easy to make and if you are as fussy as i am .. or have special needs.. like i do, you make your own.  Afterall, one can’t eat fish and chips at home.. without my home made tartar sauce with a little sambal oelek or siracha chilli sauce.. mauahahhaha!!

Here’s my recipe :

Finely chop 3 gherkin pickles and transfer to a small bowl.  Add 75ml low fat mayo, 75ml of low fat plain yogurt, 2 tbsp of chopped cilantro or parsley with 7ml of Dijon mustard.  Whisk to combine.  If you are like me.. and like it spicy .. i add some sambal oelek to it.

Asparagus

While not many people in my family like asparagus and appreciate it as much as I do, they come plenty cheap here in Canada.  In fact, I just saw a few boxes unloaded in the local grocery store the other day.. and can’t resist taking some pictures of it for all of you.  Asparagus are the easiest to cook and they donch even take long.  Some ppl eat them plain.. by steaming them.. which i do all the time.. but i prefer to have them with Hollandaise sauce.  Hollandaise sauce are easy to make at home.. or if you are anything like me.. you would choose it from a bottom.  No harm to it for sure.

  • Wash and snap the ends off the asparagus. Steam asparagus for approximately 4-5 minutes, or just until tender crisp.* Keep warm.
  • Meanwhile, in a blender, combine egg yolks, seasonings, and lemon juice. While machine is on, drizzle in melted butter. Mixture will thicken. Add additional seasonings to reach desired taste.
  • Pour on asapargus and serve immediately.

*Asparagus can also be boiled or roasted.

Some like my dear cousin, loves her asparagus wrapped in bacon, but who can blame her.. when she is as skinny as a stick after having like 4 boys.  But whatever way you choose to eat your asparagus.. know that asparagus is full of vitamin B6 and an excellent source of thiamin, high in Folic Acid a very good source of potassium, fiber with Vitamins A and C as well.  And absolutely low in calories, so ladies .. feed up and eat away, while i enjoy them with my wine of the month.
