Yummy – Yum.. she said..  hahaha!!  a very expressive gal and looks like someone needs the best appetite suppressant really soon .. hahhaha!!! if she doesn’t stop eating junk..!!  Wait.. i think it is “ang moh” who needs it more.. for his junk appetite.

Sugar Bowl

Posted by mamabok | Cooking,Gadgets,Kitchen,Useful Tips | Saturday 30 May 2009 1:24 pm

Sad to say, we don’t own a sugar bowl.  Why..??  because we rarely use sugar in our food or drinks.  A packet of sugar weighing 2kg can last us for 3 years or even more.  For my cooking, i use very little sugar and baking i am not very good at it, so we usually end up with a ready mix.  Even then… i rarely want something with lots of sugar.  As a matter of fact, I don’t like to see “ang moh” eating sugar either. But every home has have to have a sugar bowl, so i figured it is time to look for one.  I found the above at $69 .. and am in love with it.   I bet the sugar in there .. can last me about 10 yrs.. muahahhah!!!

This charming sugar bowl makes for a happy little addition to the home. Stores sugar or, should you wish, spices, herbs, etc. Set comes with a plastic spoon that fits neatly under the lid. The gorgeous cedar wood is fastened together with carefully chosen slices of sakura (Japanese cherry blossom) bark. You’ll absolutely love this artistic and practical piece.

Product details

  • completely hand-crafted from Akita located in northern Japan
  • diameter: 9.5cm (3.7″) ; height: 6.5cm (2.5″)
  • lightweight, yet remarkably strong – made to last for years.
  • hand-wash with warm water and soap and store in a dry cool place
  • do not microwave

Magewappa is a marvelous 400-year old traditional craft that originated in Odate City in Japan’s northern Akita prefecture. It is painstakingly created by thinly shaving perfectly straight-grain cedar wood, specially planted on the eastern side of the Shirakami Mountains, a present-day World Heritage Natural Resource site. This complex procedure involves boiling the shavings, and repeatedly bending and fastening them together by hand with carefully chosen slices of sakura (Japanese cherry blossom) bark. Only cedar wood that is 100 years old or more can endure this demanding process.

A finished Magewappa creation is remarkably lightweight and bears a naturally faint aroma that magnificently compliments Japanese food and drink – especially sushi and sake. Sushi-bachi plates are further treated with a gorgeous red lacquer to aid preservation and presentation. A true feast for the eyes and a sure conversation-starter when entertaining friends and guests.

Eating Out

Posted by mamabok | Food Review,Seafood,The Brat,The Other Half | Friday 29 May 2009 3:59 pm

There isn’t many places that we want to go eat .. mostly because we already eat at the store everyday… so on Sundays.. we really like to eat at home. But we are torn in between cooking and just lazing around.  Sundays is Chloe’s day..  that’s what she calls them.. so we let her decide, plus, we needed to look for some iphone accessories , so we headed to the mall.

The “ang moh” of course had his boring fish and chips .. but that’s because this is the only thing ..  Chloe would eat, else she is gonna end up eating fries only.  But she did eat a scallop.. because i tricked her into believing that they were fish nuggets.. muahahahahah!!!!

Chloe has come a long way with eating.  But we still bring her own forks and spoons and her own water and juice.. if we do go out and eat.  Plus she is very well behaved when she is out in the open.. so we really don’t mind bringing her out for makan sessions.

Stir Fry Vegies

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Cooking,My Musing,Vegies | Thursday 28 May 2009 12:55 pm

Mr Choo had given me some vegies about a week ago, I think that it is because I had given him a box of home grown baby bok choi from Chloe’s grampie’s garden, so it is his way of thanking me.  Everyone knows that I love vegies.. and I always try and eat them all if i can – in fact in one sitting.

Vegies are so easy to cook – stir frying them.. with a little garlic and stir fry sauce is all that is needed.  Unfortunately hor .. this vegie from Mr Choo .. had to be chewed properly .. unlike the ones that Chloe’s grampie grows for me.  But it could be because i kept it for so long before cooking them.

Perfect meal .. for a perfect day .. and a perfect person.. muahahahah!!! so thick skin hor I.

Sometimes It’s Not The Sandwich

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Awesome,Fast Food,Food Review,My Musing | Tuesday 26 May 2009 12:49 pm

Where would you go again .. and again .. for some lunch.. ???  Doesn’t all the sandwich taste about the same..??  So why do some ppl go to a particular cafe or fast food restaurant on a daily basis..??  Is it really because of the food..?? or a particular coffee aroma..???

For me.. it’s the ppl who works in the cafe or sandwich place or the restaurant.. that would make me come back over and over again.  I’m not a really fussy customer.. but at times.. i could be wierd.. and asked for a half – half sandwich.  This sandwich cost the same.. irregardless whether i have all egg salad or chicken salad.. but you see at times.. a variety is good.. and i never asked for it.. when the sandwich place is busy.  Some would accommodate me.. but some would not.  And to those who does.. during non peak hours.. i’m forever grateful.  Since you all know that I come from a place.. where I can get just about any kind of food.. from Indian food to Chinese food or Japanese or Greek and even Swiss food..   or Malay food and the list goes on.

The employees are assets of the company.. but it is just as important that the employers empower the employees to try and go beyond the call of duty.. even if it was a simple sandwich.  And yes.. i got my first half-half sandwich.. and no.. i won’t be asking for another one like this for a long time.. becasue i know.. it is not right.  But sometimes.. a nice gesture from the gal over the counter.. can have a lasting impression.. and make a very home sick customer very happy.

If there is one thing the brat would eat over and over again is crackers.  Yes, just plain crackers.. not ones with peanut butter, not ones with jam, not even ones topped with chocolate nutella.  She eats it plain.. and she just loves them, she eats them in school, she eats them as a snack at night.  Strange as it is.. the brat just don’t wanna try new stuff.. unlike her mom.. yours truly.  Yes.. ! and she likes making faces .. and taking pictures.. when she is being silly and she loves helping me with the diaper cakes for a baby shower.

Wood Fungus

Posted by mamabok | Chinese,Food From Home,Food Review,General,My Musing | Wednesday 20 May 2009 2:34 pm

Wood Ear or Wood Fungus as they called it is good for cooling the blood, arrest bleeding, prevent blood coagulation after injury or giving birth.  It is said to relieve hemorrhoids as well .. and relieve vaginal bleeding.  Ok.. so we know all the good stuff about the Wood fungus/ear .. “mok yee” in cantonese but i want to let you all know that “mok yee” is very hard on the digestive system.  Why do i say that..??  a year ago, after my major operation to remove my  huge fibroids.. weighing like 3Kg (size of a new born baby) and a full hysterectomy..  I had complication after eating steamed chicken with mok yee.  When i was puking for 6 hrs.. all the mok yee came out .. none digested.. if you know what i mean.  I haven’t had mok  yee for a year now.. and yesterday.. i had some vegetarian food.. and had mok yee again.  So guess what happened..??  yes..  the mok yee doesn’t wanna digest either this time.

Just for general info.. in case .. you had a bowel obstruction .. or feel constipated all the time.. mok yee might be the cause of it.  I’m gonna stop taking mok yee for now, so that I don’t get into any trouble.  I thought i would share some of my personal experience with you.  If anyone got tips.. or general info.. please share, share eh.

Hi mamabok

Hope you are feeling better!
I’ve come down with bronchitis so I have to stay in doors. The good thing that has come out of it is that I’ve been watching alot of the cooking channels and being a newly wed, i’m terrible at cooking hehehe.. my mum comes over each week to help me out by stocking the freezer with food and soup.
However, I was inspired by the cooking shows that I actually made my own pizza for dinner. After 3 attempts, it finally turned out hehehe I got good reviews by the hubby but was contemplating whether to send it in to you. Its not as pretty as everything all ur fans have made but i’m improving! Didn’t cause the smoke alarm to go off this time at least LOL.
What do you think? Might be a case of my hubby not wanting to break my spirit LOL

“Tai Kau Meen” From Barb

Posted by mamabok | Around The World,Chinese,Food From Home,Meet Up With | Monday 18 May 2009 4:53 pm

Barb and I go a long way.  We met as blogging mummies doing online work with several companies. – Barb has several blogs and one of them is www.chumseyashley.info, this blog talks about her bringing up her only daughter – Ashley.  Barb is generous and genuine.. and never judge me .. but is always supportive.  She sends me plenty of food from home too.. and she has a very lovely daughter.. who does some modeling work for a local magazine/mall. So now.. Barb is actually a “xing ma”.  If you can’t get ahold of me or Lina.. the next person you should try is Barb.  Or better yet, you can hop over her blog .. and say hi.

Anyhow.. this is Barb’s contribution .. for sharing food around the world with everyone else.  Thanks Barb… you are a sport.  And I love this kueh too.. i prefer peanuts in them.. and yes.. you have to eat them piping hot.   I think they are like $1.20 a piece .. when i left home for Canada.. how much is it now..??

Hey Jan,

I’m participating in the fun Share Your Food post.  Attached is a photo of “Tai Kau Meen” also known as Chinese pancake or Apom Balik in Bahasa Malaysia :) (Sorry the photo is not very clear)  I bought it from the pasar malam last thursday.  It’s good to eat when it’s piping hot.  The tai kau meen is filled with peanuts, sugar, margarine and corns.  Some people would put kaya spread on them instead of margarine. A bit too sweet for me though.

Crab Porridge/Congee

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Chinese,My Musing,Useful Links,Useful Tips | Saturday 16 May 2009 6:07 pm

Anyone had crab porridge before..?? if you haven’t you have to try it.  It’s awesome..!! i donch know how Mr Choo from the chinese restaurant cooked it.. but it didn’t have any fishy smell to it at all.  But there were bits of ginger in it too.   I have been eating crab so much lately, guess who is gonna need some acne treatments soon.

But how does one refuse food from home.. when you don’t get food from home at all here.  So if someone offers to cook it for you .. and free at that.. you never refuse right..??  So even if it is too heaty or “poisonous” .. as the chinese say crabs are..  you just eat it.. and die later kinda attitude right..?? muahahahha!!

A hole crab leg .. for a bowl of porridge.  Although messy .. and i normally won’t eat them at home.. Asia.. i didn’t feel that messy eating it here.. because beggars cannot be choosers lah.

Plus he gave me the rest of the crab that didn’t go into the porridge/congee.  How can not like Mr Choo right..??  So what i did..?? bought some skin care .. by Botanics for his wife lah.  Cannot lah .. always take right..?? must give back too.
