Noodles

Posted by HoWeiSek | Amusing/Bizarre,Chinese,The Brat,The Other Half | Saturday 15 August 2009 2:39 pm

One of the best noodles that Mr Zhu had fried for us.. with a lot of vegies.. and little chicken.. but guess what..?? the brat wouldn’t even not even the tiniest green.. so the poor “ang moh” had to pick the noodles by the strand. Yes ! that is how fussy she was with her food.  That must be why .. the “ang moh” donch like to eat noodles eh.  But to me.. it was the perfect healthy meal – carbs with lots of vegies and very little meat.

Blueberry Bloom Donut

Posted by HoWeiSek | Cakes/Desserts,My Musing,Western | Friday 14 August 2009 11:48 am

Tim Hortons had this Blueberry donuts for a few weeks now.. and i had been tempted to buy and taste it.. but knowing that I’m diabetic…. i’ve gotta really give priority to what i really can afford to eat.  But today, it just came out from the oven.. so i bought one to try.  I rarely eat donuts or anything sweet.. because my favorite donuts are the ones i get from home.. with plain sugar.  When i was younger.. i used to love dunkin donuts.. and can’t get enough of it… but when i reached 30 ..  gotta take care lah.. and watch what i put in my body.

Very pretty right ..  the blueberry bloom donut..??  not as fresh as i thought it would be.. i am guessing.. they just heated it up again.. and it wasn’t really fresh.  And it was sweet..  !!!!!  i just had a bite.. and it’s sweeter than my piece of cheesecake.  So here i am contemplating .. if i should continue eating.. or not.  Your guess is as good as mine.

BBQ Wedding Reception

Posted by HoWeiSek | Awesome,BBQ,Canadian,My Musing,Western | Thursday 13 August 2009 8:43 pm

Westerners wedding and Chinese wedding are pretty much different.  I’ve been to many chinese weddings.. and a few western weddings – and they are different.  The “ang moh’s” cousins got married last month.. and we attended both wedding.  The first one was a BBQ wedding reception . .and they had hamburgers/hotdogs.. and sausges..  potato salad and another kind of salad.. but by the time we got to it.. it was gone – and no refills.

There was a line up.. and although reception started at 6pm, by the time we got to the food, it was 8pm.. so not good for a diabetic like myself.  The family and friends were nice of course.. but the food.. well, just not really what i would normally eat .. so i went home quite hungry.. even though i had 1 and a half sausage. .and some burned burger pattie… muahahhahaha!!

The groom’s father must be some volunteer fireman..?? because the firemen were there to help BBQ the food.  But one thing i have to say .. that i was totally flabberghasted was .. there were no water nor pop .. for the guests.

I can understand if they donch wanna provide beer lah.. coz’ some ppl drink like a fish.. but water and pop..?? they are so cheap lah..!! why lah.. donch have even that..???  *peng shan*

Claypot Rice In Rice Cooker

Posted by HoWeiSek | Awesome,Chinese,Cooking,Food From Home | Monday 10 August 2009 12:28 am

A week or so ago, my long time blogging friend cooked this and i cannot helped but drool.  Jomel is a very beautiful and talented mom of 3 .. and someone whom i salute to .. for her strength, for all her heartfelt posts that i’ve read for many years.  Jomel is now happily married ..  and she also cooks for her family very often despite her busy schedule and still managed to look awesome.. !

Anyhow, i had asked her to share her recipe.. in which she immediately had it posted up.  I tried the recipe out a few days later.. and Chloe loves the claypot rice. Thanks Jomel.  I’m sharing Jo’s recipe with all of you.. especially those living overseas..  whether you are a student.. or someone married and migrated to a foreign land.. this is so easy and a quick way to have a good meal.  Try it and let me know how yours turn out.

Ingredients:
- 750g chicken, cut into pieces
- 5 dried shitake (chinese) mushrooms
- 3 tbsp cooking oil
- 2 clove garlic, minced
- 1 chinese sausage, sliced thinly (optional).
- salted fish, cut into cubes and fried (optional)
- spring onion, sliced

Preparation:
Marinate chicken pieces with-
ginger extract: pound one inch ginger and squeeze out the juice
2 tbsp light soy sauce
1 tbsp dark soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp rice wine
1 tsp sesame oil
dash of white pepper.

Soak the shitake mushroom until it’s soft. Squeeze out excess water from the mushrooms, and slice them thickly.

1. Cook 3 cups of rice in rice cooker, according to your usual way of cooking rice.

2. When rice is cooking, stir fry chopped garlic with 3 tbsp oil till lightly browned.

3. Add the chicken and mushroom, stir fry on high heat until chicken pieces are browned. Add more oil if too dry. (You don’t have to fry till the chicken is fully cook because the steam from the rice will cook it further.)

3. When the water from the rice has been absorbed, i.e. open the lid of the rice cooker, and you see no more water on the rice, add the chicken and mushroom, and chinese sausage into the rice cooker. (Do this before the cooked light indicator turns on).

4. Add a dash of light (abt 1 1/2 tbsp) and dark soy sauce (abt 1 tbsp) into the rice, to flavour rice. (Before serving, give it a taste. You may add more soy sauce at this point if it’s not salty enough)

5. Give it a good stir, and cover lid. Switch off the rice cooker and allow the steam within to incorporate all the flavours. For about 20 minutes.

With Love From Kai Mah – Lina

Posted by HoWeiSek | Awesome,Food From Home,Meet Up With,My Musing,The Brat | Saturday 8 August 2009 2:30 pm

This is long over-due and i apologize to everyone for taking so long to put the pictures up to show you how generous Kai Mah – Lina is.  John Chow – the pro-blogger and blogging mogul had asked a month ago, what is the greatest asset  of this blog – is it the revenue ?  the # of ppl who comes to your blog..??  or is it your credibility..??

For me, it is none of the above but the good ppl that I’ve come to be friends with – the genuine concern, the true ppl – whom I’ve come to trust and rely on to chat with and support me emotionally & mentalilywhen the need arises.  These ppl – like Lina, Barb, Alice, Macy, Jo, Vien, Anna, Eucee, Gracie, Jenny , Vernessa,  – to name just a few are such wonderful ppl – who have been priceless in my journey in the blogging world.  Is it possible to have such wonderful relationship with your blogging friends..??  OF COURSE..!!!  – afterall, I met “ang moh” online and been together for 16 yrs – and even have an awesome kid with him.  There are so many ppl whom I’m indebted to – for their kindness shown towards me and Chloe.

We received this huge package just after we came home from our mini – vacation in early July.  Yes, yes.. ! i’m such a slacker… didn’t post here .. and say big “thank you” to Kai Mah for Chloe.  Chloe was upset… asked me today.. when I’m gonna have it posted up.. hahhahaha!!!

A limited edition of Hello Kitty – Japanese costume is so precious to Kai Mah .. yet she is willing to send it over to give to Chloe.  Chloe is so touched.. she had asked me again just yesterday.. why Kai Mah would send this to her.. since it was so precious.. ?  I had answered her that Kai Mah loves her so much.. that she is willing to give her the best stuff she has.  And Chloe nodded in understanding.. and placed it back in her bedroom display cupboard.. with great care.  She knows she is not even allowed to bring it to the store – in case she gets it dirty.

Little mini packages of Hello Kitty marshmallows that Chloe so loved.  She shares them with her friends.. but not too much she said.

A pinkish cheong sam that Chloe wore during her cousin’s wedding.  Chloe loved the cheong sam and everyone who was at the wdding loved it too.

Another dress for Chloe with strawberry prints.. and just right for summer.  Chloe wore this the next day for Seafest. Again, she loved it.. and cannot wait to tell everyone where it is from.

A full bag of Jelly beans.. haven’t eaten yet.

And of course, goodies for me lah..!! you wouldn’t think Lina would forget about me right..?? dried scallops..!! woohoo..!! for my soup..! now to find some lotus roots.

Hou Sei for me .. and chinese mushrooms for Chloe.  We haven’t eaten the hou sei and dried scallop but the mushrooms yes.. eaten.. and chloe loved it.. and said.. they were the best mushrooms in the world.. LOL..!!!  So you see .. what this blog’s greatest asset are ..?? good friends.. good food.. and good company..  :)   Thank you, Kai Mah .. for your generousity..!  “ang moh” again quite overwhelmed by all the kindness shown in the world wide web.

PS :  More presents from Kai Mah – to be cont’d..

Bak Chang In Canada

Posted by HoWeiSek | Awesome,Canadian,Chinese,Food From Home,My Musing | Friday 7 August 2009 9:00 pm

To eat Bak Chang in this part of Canada.. is almost impossible.  The ones that one can get frozen in Halifax is nothing compared to the ones I can get back home.  I love my Nyonya Chang very much – but when i was home – i rarely eat them for fear of high cholestrol and also donch wanna be fat mah.  But now .. having no chance to eat it.. and all.. still my family doctor said .. i have to watch my weight.. else i could be obsese is ironic.

But nevermind, old Mrs Zhu to the rescue.. !!! remember the Zhus..?? who owned New Century Restaurant..?? yes.. them… the good ppl who had always taken care of me. Mr Zhu’s mother is back from China.. because Mrs Zhu will be delivering her second baby in a few weeks time.  So she came to visit at the store last week.. and brought me these Bak Chang.  Not the same as the ones from home.. but beggars better not be choosers right..??

Anyway.. i darn greedy lah..!!  gotta eat immediately .. and inside were meat, chinese sausages but the bak chang got mung beans one.. so unique hor.  It didn’t taste like the bak chang back home.. but still very good lah.. in my opinion.  But then hor.. bak chang causes bad wind in my tummy.  Darn xiong hor.  But i enjoyed it.. and i still have some more.. but donch dare to eat.. muahahhahaha!!!   I so wished i had learned how to make Bak Chang from my grandaunt who was a Nyonya/Peranakan – alas ! i would i know i would kahwin “ang moh” … and live in “ang moh” town leh.

88 Cents Pie

Posted by HoWeiSek | Cakes/Desserts,My Musing,Shopping,Useful Links,Useful Tips,Western | Thursday 6 August 2009 5:07 pm

It is only in the West that I find one can get pies this cheap.  $0.88 for a frozen chocolate pie is a deal that no Canadian can resist.  Even if they are not so good, it’s alright.. !! for $0.88 cents.. how can you NOT buy it – i guessed that was the mentality that “ang moh” had when he bought the pie.  No prizes for guessing how much i ate from this pie.  As for electronics..  like cellular phones well, I cannot say they come as cheap as they do in Asia.  The pie was pretty good.. cannot complain lah..  for $0.88 cents.

Wedding Cakes

Posted by HoWeiSek | Around The World,Cakes/Desserts,Canadian,Western | Saturday 1 August 2009 4:05 pm

Weddings are so awesome..!! who doesn’t like going to weddings right..?? as for me.. if i get invited.. i die-die must go one.  Why leh..?? because weddings are such happy occasions and i just love seeing the brides.  We had 2 weddings in 2 weeks.. and that’s because the brides are twins.. and cousins of “ang moh”.

The “ang moh” weddings are different from ours .. and i’m sure you all knows this.  The wedding cake can be eaten.. and the top layer is supposed to be frozen and thawed out during the first anniversary or when they have their first born.. if i did not get it wrong.

The first wedding .. that was 2 weeks ago.. we did not get to eat the wedding cake .. bummer..!  but we did get to eat the second wedding cake.. in fact.. the bride and the groom served us the cake.  Now wasn’t that awesome or what..??
