Rice Roll Shaker

So I saw this gadget on youtube from one of my favorite vlogger , and since we do not have a Daiso in our small little town of Yarmouth, NS, Canada.  What do I do?  reach out to my many friends from all over the world in my network of friends to get me one if they have a Daiso.  And sure enough a few weeks later, this package arrived from the United States of America !  woohoo !  Eddie my long time blogging friend sent me one and refused to let me pay for it.  How sweet is he?

This gadget cost less than $2 USD but the postage is about $10 USD.  And what do one use it for , I hear you asking?

Well, as you can see here, one can make sushi rolls very easily with this gadget and if you see the video by Ochikeron from Create Eat Happy, you will get an idea how you can make use of the gadget easily.  But on the wrapper that comes with the plastic gadget, they do also show you how.  It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to use the gadget and it’s really fun.  So check it out and if you want one, check with your friends from Asia or even in United States, I’m very blessed as you can see to have friends from around the world, who are so generous to me.  Thank you Eddie !

Fancy Sandwich Box At Tim Hortons

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Breakfast,Canadian,Food Review,FoodBuzz | Wednesday 10 June 2015 11:06 am

I ordered a turkey croissant this morning at my local Tim Hortons and was kinda surprised to get this fancy box for packaging.  Usually my sandwiches come wrapped up with Tim’s wrapper and it was good with me but having a fancy box is way nicer because one can always leave half the sandwich for later , if one gets too busy at the store.  As for me, I left the other half for a friend and the box came in handy to bring the half croissant to her.

Loved the sandwich but would have still preferred my croissant to be toasted but they don’t do that at Tim’s no more.  What a bummer !

Wait Staff Can Make Or Break You

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Canadian,Food Review,General,My Musing | Friday 2 January 2015 4:10 pm

I thought I would share my 2 cents with you since I eat out a lot because of work.  Most time, we choose a restaurant because of how good the food is but sometimes, one can stop going to a restaurant not only because of bad food but more like the wait staff just don’t make the cut.

I’m pleased to let you all know that 99% of the wait staff that I’ve come across in our small town are awesome but of course , there are just 1 or 2 of them that irks me each time I go to their restaurant.  I won’t name which wait staff  nor the restaurant because that ain’t important.  The important fact is , the next time I encounter that particular wait staff, I’m gonna ask to change a table or change the person waiting on me.

I normally, try to ignore the tacky service as I’m sure that I’m not perfect either when I serve my customers at my store.  I am sure some people don’t like me either but if I am paying close to $80 for meals at lunch, I wanna be able to enjoy my lunch and not have to deal with tacky services.

So yes, good wait staff are awesome to have but if no one tells that particular wait stuff about his/her tacky service, then he or she might not even know that he or she might have offended other customers as well.  But if I keep asking for another wait staff, I hope that he or she will get the hint.

So my 2015 ‘s new year resolution ?  not to condone tacky services, because if it irks me so much , how can i enjoy my food for the next hour.  And I certainly don’t deserve that. well, nobody deserves tacky services.

New Tim Hortons Christmas Cups

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Canadian,Coffee/Tea/Hot,Drinks,FoodBuzz,My Musing | Friday 5 December 2014 10:53 pm

I just noticed that Tim Hortons have a new cup design for their coffee.  So cute !  Looks a little like a wool type material with reindeer.   I don’t think I’ve seen this new cup before in previous years, so this is a nice change.  I don’t know about other folks but I think different patterns on coffee cups for different seasons and occasion is really cool and would make me want to buy more coffee.  what about you?

Scary Halloween Haunted Houses

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Entertainment,General,My Musing,Parties,Useful Links,Useful Tips | Wednesday 22 October 2014 11:19 am

Yes, we are turning our summer cottage into a Halloween Haunted House for friends and family and the spouse bought the oldest electronic instrument to provide all the scary sounds one can imagine for a haunted house.  Now I didn’t think that it was going to be that scary, till I saw what the machine could do.  It was very scary music alright!  Of course, as soon as we had the try out with the other parents, they want  More  of these scary sound effect to scare the kids and adults.  A friend who is a make up artist has agreed to help with the make up and I know that the kids are going to enjoy it very much.  Some may cry and some may not go to sleep after they have seen our haunted house at our summer cottage but the neighbors at the cottage are also coming together to help us with the haunted house and one even is loaning us their pony for rides for the kids.  It is going to be a blast!

PS  :  There will be hot apple cider and lots of cookies for the kids.

Halloween Donut

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Baking,Cakes/Desserts,Canadian,Food Review | Friday 17 October 2014 9:40 pm

Tim Hortons have a special donut for all season and all occasions, this one is the Halloween donut and I think they will stop making it once Halloween is over.  Chloe said it is pretty good and it is a little bit more expensive than the usual donut I think.  But who cares about the price if the donut is good right?  So Chloe have had this twice but she also likes the birthday donut as well and I can assure you if they are good and she likes it, it must mean that it’s ridiculously sweet.

While out searching for chips for a girlfriend from Singapore, look what I found!!!  Yup ! must be new chip flavors from Lay’s.  Looks so yummy right?  I haven’t tried them yet but I’m going to do so soon.

This is like some kinda cucumber dip?

Woohoo!  cinnamom buns.

mac and cheese !  yums for PB!

Brunch With Friends

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Breakfast,Canadian,Food Review,Friendship,My Musing | Wednesday 2 April 2014 2:45 pm

We had promised Jessica to bring her out for brunch for the longest time and even though she would be very happy with just Macdonald’s, we decided to bring her to The Snack Place – 2 blocks down the road from our store.  As you all know, we don’t have a lot of family here from my side, so Jessica is like a cousin from the East that Chloe never had.  The kids play well together and Jessica is the nicest lil’ kid we know and her parents are of course, awesome people and like some parents that we know around here.

Jessica ordered a cheeseburger with fries and a pop from the children’s menu.

Hyunjin’s fish and chips but she opted for salad instead.

Jessica enjoying her little pop.

Salad for Hyunjin.

My brunch is of course the all day breakfast but without the fries.

Fish and chips for Chloe from the Children’s menu.

Bonding time with her “cousin”

Girls having fun.

Jessica with dessert .

And chloe licking up the yummy goodness.  Good to see that Chloe has good friends to learn from.

Cheap But Awesome Lunch

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Canadian,Chinese,Food Review | Thursday 20 February 2014 10:44 pm

Take out lunch need not be expensive especially if you know the owners of the restaurant.  Lotus soup was free and yummy – boiled with beef.

And half an order of Singapore noodles because I didn’t really know what I wanted to eat.  So the soup and the noodles just hit the spot and i wasn’t even hungry till late in the evening today.

Happy Birthday PB !

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Cakes/Desserts,Canadian,My Musing,The Brat,The Other Half | Monday 2 December 2013 4:13 pm

Yes, it was PB’s 41 birthday today and even though he doesn’t like any big celebration, we surprised him with a cake and chocolates.  We tricked him into believing that we had forgotten his birthday and then came back to the store with a cake and sang him a happy  birthday song.  Although he didn’t looked too pleased – hahhahaha!!  because he doesn’t liked all the fuss – we did love that we managed to do something special for him.

Hauling Food From City

We were up in the city a few weeks ago, to haul some food home with some friends and this is but one of the many boxes that we hauled home.  So PB said maybe he should look at some  flatbed trailers  , so that the next time we need to haul food home from the city, we don’t need to bring another car with us.   Plus a flatbed trailer is great when we need to move furniture from home to the cottage, it would definitely be a great investment for us.

But coming back to all the food we hauled back from the city.  Some friends laughed and joked about opening a Asian grocery store here but there isn’t enough Asians in this area for me to do that.  Therefore, every couple of months, you see us going to Halifax and bringing all kinds of ingredient and paste home, even the noodles that I am used to back home, we can’t find them locally.  I bought luncheon meat, noodles, paste, drinks from home and candies from home and anything I cannot find here even soya sauce.  So yes, having a trailer may definitely work better for us instead of making the g/f  bring her SUV with us.

Clams @ The Beach & A Volley Ball Game

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Canadian,Food Review,My Musing,Seafood | Saturday 13 July 2013 10:41 am

The extended family and us had a BBQ at the beach because Godma Lynn came home from Toronto.  This year we didn’t do the BBQ at the lodge because the water pump wasn’t working.  We ended at the beach but I would have preferred it at the lodge but the kids loved the beach and the weather was awesome that day plus a volley ball game was in order too.  Luckily, I bought some new sports bra from for plus size sport bras  not too long ago, so I was pretty happy about joining in the volley ball game.

Joey the cousin’s hubby brought some clams to be boiled at the beach – and for those who loved clams I’m sure you would have enjoyed it but I didn’t eat any and I’m glad I didn’t because my tummy didn’t feel too well after the BBQ.  But having clams at the beach was kinda different and I know that the rest of the family enjoyed it.

8 Pounder Lobster

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Canadian,Food Review,My Musing,Seafood | Wednesday 15 May 2013 2:17 pm

Need I say more?  this came into our store from our dear friend Cory – one of the nicest people I’ve known in town.  Gotta love friends like that right.  But this went to my sister from another mother – who enjoys lobsters a lot.

Huge bugger.

Lots of meat and just caught.

Pet Food At Sobeys

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,My Musing,Shopping | Friday 5 April 2013 10:52 am

Not at the local Sobeys but the Sobeys up in the city and I was kinda surprised and hope that the sobeys here don’t go selling pet food too because we do have pet food shops here like the Ascension Pet Needs next to Car Quests where Jungle Jim’s is.   Love Sobeys but would hate if we lose a local business if they start doing that.

In the city, the population is greater, so they can afford to have a Sobeys that carries pet food but not in a town with less than 7000 in population.

I don’t own a pet but if I do, I would want to support our local business just because they know more than your ordinary cashier at Sobeys and they can do special orders for you as well.

I love Sobeys for their groceries but no don’t bring in the Pet food, just like don’t get into movies  – because there are local stores like ours who does movies.

Wrong Sign Sobeys?

Hehehe!!  on sale from $6.99 to $6.99 – hahah! my laugh for the day but the salmon was pretty good.

Party In Style

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Entertainment,My Musing,Shopping,The Other Half,Useful Links,Useful Tips,Vacation | Friday 7 December 2012 9:50 pm

We were invited to a Christmas party by a business acquaintance and it was not in town – but in the city.  We didn’t have any trouble getting there but I wished they had arranged for transport for us because we were not very familiar with that part of the city.  Anyhow, we made our own arrangements for transportation and even though it’s not quite like the  limo service tampa fl  , it was still pretty good.  I was all dressed up – for the party and didn’t want to be waiting for a cab – no way!  I wanted to party in style – the hotel rooms were paid for and so was the short air-flight that we took – but I don’t understand why they didn’t arrange for a limo for us – that baffles me really. After the party, there was no cab available to take us back to the hotel and once again, I wished a limo service was arranged, the next time we go for this kind of party, I’m going to make sure we have a limo service to and fro the party.

Home Cooked Chilli Crab

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Awesome,Canadian,Chinese,Food From Home,Food Review,My Musing | Wednesday 23 May 2012 11:38 pm

The crab came from my father-in-law and the Sambal paste came from Jen from passion4food.ca.  Father-in-law had a few bagful of crabs left on his doorsteps and he had already cooked it – he gave me some to bring home.  So today, I stirred fried it with sambal sauce from Tean – and it was darn yummy!  gotta loved the father-in-law for sharing his food with me.

Farmer’s Market

Spring is here and I’m hoping that the weather will cooperate with us – so that PB and I with Chloe of course can go to the Farmer’s Market around the county area.  I loved the Farmer’s market so much – because it’s the best place to get all the good food – and home made with the best ingredients.  And as for Chloe she loved all the handicraft made by these very talented and artistic people.  There are some  farm stools we saw last year and we didn’t get them and regretted much – so this time round – we are going to get some for Chloe and her friends. We are also trying to get some lawn chairs – that are hand-painted for our lawn because we are going to be landscaping it this spring.  I look forward to buying all these wonderful things at the Farmer’s Market.
