004

My simple lunch today with rice are these squids from Su Lee & shrimps from the Zhu’s – how much ?  didn’t cost me a cent.  I provided the chilli sauce from home, some sambal paste from Tean’s and the Zhu’s cooked them up for me for lunch.  It was so yummy!  I had leftover to go with my supper as well.

Our Asian community might be small here but we do look out for each other.

It`s pretty awesome to have foodies from all over the world as your friends.  And yes, I`m super blessed to have friends from all over the world send me food because they know I can`t buy the food over here in Yarmouth.  So every month , I do get care packages from friends and family from all over the world because they must like me . heheh!

016

I have some teh tarik from home, some lychee jello for chloe .

017

And of course, some Assam fish paste for my assam fish curry.  I also learned a new way to cook my assam curry and recently I`ve been experimenting more with my food.  And yes, my kid and I are totally blessed with so many people to love us and take care of us.

Curry Shrimp With Veggies

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Canadian,Chinese,Food From Home,Food Review,My Musing | Saturday 25 October 2014 10:07 pm

006

Ì`m sure by now you all know how much I loved spicy food.  And the spicier the better.  So the Zhu`s at the New Century Restaurant tries every which way to help me with my lunch all the time.  So today , I order some shrimp with curry and of course the veggies with some rice.  Not too much rice but this was definitely spicy !!!  good food !  yums!

PS  :  Be nice to the restaurant owners and you can get all kind of food. But of course, don`t be an asshole of an owner , like some people in some restaurant that we all know, else ppl will just stop eating at your place.  If you can`t take constructive criticism than that will be your downfall. Your lost not mine – plenty of restaurants to eat from.

Donut Galore

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Baking,Cakes/Desserts,My Musing | Monday 6 October 2014 2:18 pm

003

I don’t eat donuts because I’m diabetic but it doesn’t mean that other people cannot enjoy it especially my in – laws and my kid.  PB didn’t eat any as well, I don’t know why he didn’t want any, I guess he likes his dad’s fudge a lot better.  But if you are in Canada and there is a Tim Hortons, you can have your fill of all kinds of donuts.  I don’t know if they are comparable to Krispy Kreme but they are definitely not bad at all.  For a dozen, one only needs to fork out less than $8.00 if I am not wrong.  But I do like my Tim’s coffee a lot and must have at least one a day.

Chloe loves the chocolate glazed donut or the double chocolate with sprinkles and there is the boston creme donut, maple donut , coconut creme, lemon and a lot more different flavor to choose from.  Unfortunately, for me they are all very, very sweet and I cannot eat them.  If I weren’t diabetic,  you will probably see me stuff my face with them.  Tim Hortons donut are good gifts to bring when visiting a friend or relative.

Butter Curry Chicken From Farmer’s Market

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Food From Home,Food Review,Indian,My Musing | Saturday 4 October 2014 1:56 pm

001

I wanted something different for lunch on the weekend and when I saw that the Farmer’s market had butter chicken, I had to get some.  But of course, it was too early for lunch, so it was kept in silver foil for a few hours , thus it was kinda mushy after awhile.  The rice and butter chicken was still warm when I ate it at 2.30pm and it was pretty good.  The next time, I would separate the butter chicken and rice, so that the rice wouldn’t be so mushy.

I do like the butter chicken but it didn’t have the stronger taste that I’m used to and it wasn’t as spicy as I liked it.  I prefer my butter chicken with chunks of chicken  and since I use jasmine rice for my own butter chicken, I didn’t smell any jasmine in the one that I bought at the Farmer’s Market.  But it was overall, a good lunch for $6.50 tax included.  Would I get it again?  definitely !

Epic Humor

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,My Musing | Tuesday 9 September 2014 9:55 pm

005

Love the sign and love the humor.  now if all eateries have a great sense of humor wouldn’t that be wonderful.   Unfortunately,  there is just one eatery in town who cannot take constructive criticism and thinks it is so funny that we refused to acknowledge them after they barged into our store and said that we tried to run their business down.  So immature too !  and his only come back was that we should paint our store too????!!!???   Yes, very immature!

Anyhow, their lost coz’ we don’t eat there anymore because we refused to deal with idiosyncrasies.  As far as my friends and I are concern, the owners, its store and food don’t exist.  In all my years of writing a food blog, this tiny eatery is the only one who behaved so immaturely and utterly ridiculous!

Burger King Breakfast

002

I called this back to school breakfast.  This was what I got PB to get me when we brought chloe back to school for a new year.  There was no line up  – Hallelujah! and don’t let my poor picture taking deceive you  because the croissant with cheese and bacon was pretty darn good. The croissant was light and fluffy , I think I’m gonna be having a lot of BK breakfast from now on.

Fish Burger From The Red Shed

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Canadian,Fast Food,Food Review,FoodBuzz | Wednesday 20 August 2014 9:58 pm

001

Sorry, I haven’t been showing you all the food I’ve eaten all summer, and don’t you worry, I still eat so well but because we’ve been so busy this summer, I hardly have time for showing off all the good food I ate.

But today, I did have one of the best fish burgers I’ve tasted and it’s from the Red Shed down the hill from where our store is.  Love the fish, it’s lightly breaded and lots of fish as you can see and the bun is nicely toasted and it was so yums!  only $6.00 tax included, one can never go wrong with a fish burger from the Red Shed.

Banana Fried Ice Cream From HoneyBee Ice Cream Parlour

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Cakes/Desserts,Canadian,Food Review,FoodBuzz,My Musing | Sunday 10 August 2014 12:41 am

023

So i finally got to try out the banana fried ice cream from Honey Bee’s near the Dayton Food Market and they not only have the fried ice cream, they also have hot dogs and sausage dogs now.

Sorry I didn’t take pictures of the hot dogs and sausage dogs that we had but both were very yummy in taste, although a little bit plain in my opinion.  The banana fried ice cream was really good too and it had 3 bananas , hot fudge and a huge scoop of ice cream and cream on top.  The sausage were $4 each and hotdogs at $3 each.  Definitely, worth a trip to Honey Bee’s , I’m going again really soon.

Shanty’s Appetizer Platter

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Food Review,My Musing | Friday 25 July 2014 6:31 pm

017

So I had to try the appetizer when the Shanty advertised it on facebook and don’t be fooled by my picture taking skills, it is actually a lot lovelier than it looks and tasted even better.

I’m sure i would loved the samosas and they had lots of potatoes skins with cheese and bacon bits because the Cuban Croquet  items weren’t ready.  But I did get a taste of it and they had offered me more later if I wanted more.  The cost of the platter was at $11.20 tax included but it was a little wait for it which I don’t mind at all because I met a lovely lady at the cafe while waiting for my take out.

The appetizer platter was a lot of potatoes to stomach, i had to leave some for the next day’s lunch.

Wacky Wing Nite @ Jungle Jim’s

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Canadian,Food Review,Junke Food,My Musing | Wednesday 16 July 2014 7:06 pm

001

In the many years that Jungle Jim’s had been in town, I never went for their Wacky Wings nite because I didn’t think I could eat a lot of wings.  But today, with my kid and a g/f we decided that we should go and see what the hype was about.   For $12.99, one can’t go too wrong right?

002

Since it was the first time that we are doing Wacky Wing nite, we didn’t know how it works.  I’m glad we got our regular waitress and she quickly explained to us and took care of our order.  If you are going for Wing nite, make sure you go early because it was quite a wait for food.  I ordered some pepperoni and chicken wings but for every all you can eat wings , you have to order a drink of like $2.99.  I had an ice lemon tea with my g/f – no sharing and the kid had an apple juice.

003

The kid ordered her own wings for $6.99.

004

While my g/f ordered some thai chicken bites

005

And french fries for the kid.  I actually didn’t want her to have fries.

006

The kid loved the wings and the fries and ate quite a lot of the wings and fries.

007

Opps !  I was wrong, she had pepsi.

009

We had more wings.

008

Garlic baguette , only had 2 pieces as no one wanted them.

011

And here the kid and the g/f is choosing the best wings for themselves.  I also had some garlic baguette and it was quite filling.   Me and the kid’s meal came to $27 + tips , while the g/f’s was about $17 + tips.  Would I go again?  oh for sure but next time with more friends and definitely will be going earlier.

Chickpea Salad From Shanty Cafe

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Canadian,Food Review,My Musing,Organic,Salads | Thursday 5 June 2014 2:33 pm

014

This chickpea salad was so good – I had to give it a shout out immediately.  Folks from town can get this at the Shanty Cafe located on 6B Central Street.  Friendly service and good food – you cannot go wrong.  But this chickpea salad reminds me of my favorite fatoush salad.

016

I loved that it’s all so well blended and I found some yummy roasted sunflower seeds in it.  A delightful salad with my samosas of course.  My salad was a small one and only cost me $3.00 + tax , if you want a large one it’s $6.00 + tax.  Check it out – it is really good.

Chef #2 @ New Century Restaurant

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Canadian,Chinese,Food Review,My Musing | Tuesday 3 June 2014 2:48 pm

008

When I don’t know what to eat, I order Chef #2 from the New Century Restaurant and this is half an order only because a whole order would be way too much for me to eat.  Look at how much veggies I’ve got in this fully loaded crispy noodles at the bottom box.   Brocolli , cabbage, water chestnuts, char siew and shrimp plus some carrots for color.  I love the smell of the crispy canton noodles as well.  For $8 – this could be my lunch and supper easily.  Try it yourself and let me know what you think.  New Century Restaurant is located on Main Street, Yarmouth.

Frozen Yogurt

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Cakes/Desserts,Canadian,Food Review,My Musing | Sunday 20 April 2014 6:58 pm

009

Frozen yogurt in town!!  woohoo! and we are addicted to it after our first try.  There isn’t much flavors to choose from but there are at least 6 right now.  Chocolate, Vanilla, Banana, Lime, Mango and Strawberry.  And between Chloe & I, we’ve tried all the flavors, now what’s most enticing were all the condiments that you can put on top of your frozen yogurt.

010

Look at Chloe’s cup of frozen yogurt, besides fruits she had some M & Ms and gummy worms and sours and hot fudge and sprinkles and chocolate bits.  The prices are not cheap either but it was worth it that’s for sure.  Both kids and adults loved it as far as we can see.  We have been going back every other day thus far.  Frozen yogurt can be found on Starrs Road inside Manda Evelyn’s store.  You can missed it.

Best Korean Food

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Food From Home,Food Review,Korean | Thursday 20 March 2014 3:18 pm

My sister from another mother makes the best Korean home cooked food – Jap Chae !  it’s a sweet potato noodles with veggies, mushrooms, beef  and all sorts of good stuff.  She makes them so well, so whenever there is a special occasion, I get to eat this yummy Jap Chae.  If you want to have the recipe to make it, check below.  The cooking recipe is adapted from a recipe I collected online.  Try it and let me know what you think.  I’m so hungry now, I think I’m gonna make some tonite.

Ingredients:

  • Sweet Potato noodles
  • 150 grams of beef
  • 1 bunch of spinach
  • 1 medium size carrot
  • 1 medium size onion
  • mushrooms (5 dried shitake mushroomsand 1 package of white mushrooms)
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 7-8 green onions
  • sesame oil, soy sauce,  sugar, pepper, and some sesame seed.

Makes 4 servings.

Prepare ingredients :

  1. Soak 5 dried shitake mushrooms in warm water for a few hours until they become soft. Squeeze the water out of them and slice thinly.
  2. Slice a package of white mushrooms (2 cups’ worth).
  3. Cut a carrot into thin matchstick-shaped pieces 5 cm long.
  4. Cut 7 -8 green onions into 7 cm long pieces.
  5. Slice one onion thinly.
  6. Slice 150 grams of beef into thin strips.

Method :

  1. Boil 2 bunches of noodles in boiling water in a big pot for about 3 minutes. When the noodles are soft, drain them and put in a large bowl.
  2. Cut the noodles several times by using scissors and add 1 tbs of soy sauce and 1 tbs of sesame oil. Mix it up and set aside.
*tip: Take one sample and taste it to see whether or not it’s cooked properly. If it feels soft, it’s finished.
  3. In the boiling water, add a bunch of spinach and stir it gently for 1 minute. Then take it out and rinse it in cold water 3 times. Remove any grit or dead leaves thoroughly while rinsing. Squeeze it gently to get the water out, then cut it into 5 cm pieces.
  4. Add ½ tbs soy sauce and ½ tbs sesame oil and mix it and place it onto the large bowl.
*tip: When you drain the hot water from the pot, don’t discard the hot water. Put it back into the pot so you can cook your spinach quickly.
  5. On a heated pan, put a few drops of olive oil and your carrot strips and stir it with a spatula for 30 seconds. Put it into the large bowl (don’t burn it!).
  6. Place a few drops of olive oil on the pan and add your sliced onion. Stir it until the onion looks translucent. Put it into the large bowl with your carrots.
  7. Place a few drops of olive oil on the pan and add the sliced white mushrooms. Stir it for a bit and then put it in the large bowl.
  8. Place a few drops of olive oil on the pan and add your green onions. Stir for 1 minute and put it into the large bowl.
  9. Place a few drops of olive oil on the pan and add your beef strips and your sliced shitake mushrooms. Stir it until it’s cooked well, then add 3 cloves of minced garlic, ½ tbs soy sauce and ½ tbs sugar. Stir for another 30 seconds and then put it into the large bowl.
  10. Add 2 tbs of soy sauce, 3 tbs of sugar, 2 tbs of sesame oil, and 1 ts of ground pepper to the large bowl. Mix all ingredients, then sprinkle 1 tbs of toasted sesame seeds on the top.
  11. Serve with rice and Kimchi, or as a side dish.

Fried Haddock Roe

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Canadian,Food Review,My Musing,Seafood | Monday 27 January 2014 12:52 pm

I saw some Haddock Roe last week and had wanted to get some to try but my father in law – Budd, had it on the stove when we arrived on Sunday for a visit.  It sure looked good but I didn’t try it but  he said it was very good and fresh.   Haddock Roes like any fish roes are a acquired taste, not everyone love it and it sure doesn’t look very appetizing before cooking them but it is really good.

Fry them up with a little corn flour and it’s ready to be tasted.  Try it if you haven’t.

This is how the haddock roe looks like in the supermarket.

Canadian Supplier For Asian Food

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Food From Home,Food Review,My Musing,Shopping | Saturday 18 January 2014 3:41 pm

Yes! a Canadian supplier for Asian food in Markham, Toronto! woohoo!!  no worries about not being able to get food from home now.  Well, not all the food that I want but at least some of the food that I’m eating.  Shipping is reasonable and they are very quick with their services.  Wen Ho Of Canada carries the Tean’s group of food that I’m currently eating now.  They also carry the 3-in-1 tea from Aik Cheong and coffee as well.

4 boxes of food delivered within 1 week of ordering, now that’s pretty quick.  I’m sure I will be ordering more food from them.

Scrumptious Lobsters

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Canadian,Food Review,Friendship,Seafood | Friday 10 January 2014 9:48 pm

Life is so good, we get lobsters from a good friend/customer every now and then or rather everytime I crave for it.  I wouldn’t know how to chop them up of course, so the Zhus not only helped to chop them up but cooked them.  I love ginger fried lobsters with scallions and green onions.

But when you have sambal tumis, you stir fry it quickly another them and eat them like nasi lemak.  It was really good!  this year I think I’m gonna eat more lobster myself than giving it to other people.
