Hunting Season

Posted by mamabok | Canadian,Gadgets,My Musing,Shopping,Useful Links,Useful Tips | Friday 14 February 2014 4:26 pm

Hunting season is not here yet but I do miss the deer meat, lucky for me, we have some frozen ones from the father-in-law who does hunt once a year. But with a  Scouting Camera  I think he has more fun just camping out and doing the man thing than shooting those deers for their meat.  Hunting is such a big part of Canada and you see people taking time off from work just to go hunting.

How does the deer meat taste?  pretty good actually and if you know how to prepare it, it is really very delicious.  I used to have deer meat stir fried but now that I’m in Canada, the father in law loves making them like steak.  I remember him trying to trick me into eating it but little did he know that I’ve always eaten deer meet in Asia.  So if I miss my deer meat, I know where to get my fix.

Good Food & Good Music

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Food Review,Gadgets,My Musing,Useful Links,Useful Tips | Monday 28 October 2013 9:57 pm

The Yarmouth Pub down on Water Street is the latest addition to our downtown eatery.  Situated near the waterfront, not too far from Rudder, you can missed it.  The Yarmouth Pub serves food on the first storey of the building and the pub is in the basement.  Good music playing at the pub as we walked up the dining area and I noticed the exact same model of a  cool gemini gvx-sub15p at guitar center  at the pub.

The dining area was nicely furnished and the waitress came immediately to offer us drinks and menu.  The mood was casual and it was warm upstairs on a cool rainy day.

I had ordered the steak because it was so cheap – and done just right!  I loved it !  I had mine with baked potatoes and I was stuffed.

My g/f had fish – haddock baked. It was special of the day and it was less than $10 I think.

It came with a salad and we both had hot lemon tea.  The bill came up to $30 + dollars – and food came promptly.  I would definitely go back and would go to the pub next time for good music and drinks.

Shopping & Eating Day

Posted by mamabok | Fast Food,Food Review,Friendship,Gadgets,My Musing,Shopping,Useful Links,Useful Tips | Thursday 27 June 2013 12:26 pm

Marking days are great days for spending time with Chloe and my girlfriends – and on days like these – I’m missing my girlfriend and her daughter – Layla who’ve left for Ottawa.  I wanted to get a cheap schecter hellraiser c-1 at guitar center  for PB but wanted to check out the stores locally to see if I can get something similar here but alas, no such luck. So I’m ordering them for him instead and of course, eating at a new place with my kid was in the itinerary for the day.

We settled for the Bread and Olive Cafe – as we haven’t been there before since they opened last year.  I had a cup of tea while Chloe had an ice tea as it was a very hot and humid day.

We both ordered quiches but different kind – one was chicken.

And the other was salmon, we preferred the chicken.

Of course, we had dessert – that we shared and in the meantime, I  was surfing the net – and ordering the guitar for PB. We had a wonderful meal – although expensive – but the service was really good.

BBQ Season

Posted by mamabok | BBQ,Gadgets,My Musing,Shopping,The Other Half,Useful Links | Friday 10 May 2013 10:31 pm

So we had our first BBQ chicken, hotdog and beef patties this year and even though we didn’t have a regular BBQ pit set up yet, our friends had a make shift one with charcoal.  They had to use a  destaco  clamp to put the make shift BBQ together but they did a really good job. And since it was a charcoal BBQ we had to take turns to watch the fire in case it becomes too hot and burn the food.

I really think that there was a real difference in taste when it comes to charcoal BBQ and the gas type, you can taste the difference and the food seems to cook a lot faster.  I can’t wait to experiment more with the charcoal BBQ pit.  Hopefully, the weather will continue to stay warm – not too hot though – and not foggy that’s for sure.

Shopping & Weekly Lunch

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Friendship,Gadgets,Kitchen Gadgets,Meet Up With,My Musing,Shopping,Useful Links,Useful Tips | Monday 11 March 2013 10:23 pm

Shopping and weekly lunches are great with my girlfriends, we not only exchange gossips and play catch up – we also learned all the good buys around town and on the internet.  If I asked a girlfriend  where to buy tv brackets  they would have a few good suggestions for me and if I needed a good pair of ski pants, they would know where to find them if I cannot find them in town.  I loved our weekly lunches and shopping spree, it’s something I looked forward to every week and although not everyone can attend the lunch together, I know I can count on them for just about anything.  Don’t you just loved friends like that?  now if you haven’t planned for weekly lunches and shopping sessions with your girlfriends, make this year the start of a new social calendar, it’s really good for the health.

If you are a food blogger and loved food as much as I do, you will know that Sandy’s Gifts Store is a gourmet/chef’s paradise .  In this store, I found some really cool gifts over Christmas for my friends and family.  Everything priced reasonably and wrapped and gift bagged personally by owners of the store – Sandy & Ken.

Everytime I walked into this store, everything in the store is eye candy to me.  They are all so pretty and so beautifully stacked and everything so meticulously cleaned.  The warmth of this store speaks volume, you really feel welcome, as if you coming home to visit.

Sandy Gifts store has gifts for every occasion and any occasion.

My favorites are kitchen gadgets and you cannot go wrong with these gifts.

For the corn lover like my daughter – Chloe, she would love to have this.

For a guy or boy – no problem – Sandy has them in boy’s color as well.

More kitchen gadget to make your food look pretty.

Yummy hot chocolate for Christmas/winter  - with a bunch of marshmallows.

More treats for your loved ones – and don’t forget the variety of tea and specialty coffee at Sandy’s Gift store on Main Street, downtown Yarmouth, they may have moved but not far away from their original store.  Friendly service and unique gifts – try Sandy’s.

The Weekend

The weekend came and went so quick, I do wished sometimes we had 48 hrs a day and not just 24 – don’t you ?  so what did you do for the weekend?  Well, we had a BBQ on Saturday with friends and relative and on Sunday the weather was so good, we went to Cape Fuchu to fly our model aircraft with some friends and extended family, then we had a feast of pizza and cake.  Our model aircraft wasn’t working so well but PB’s uncle used a clevis pin and fixed it or hold it together and since he wouldn’t let us pay for the clevis pin – we bought lunch for everyone.   We all had chicken and pineapple pizza from Greco and cake from Superstore, we decided that everyone should order what they liked and most ordered the same thing and I was too hungry and didn’t get pictures of the rest of the pizza except ours.

The truffle cake was so yummy – it was all mousse and chocolate and no cake in it – Chloe loved it.

Very rich but not too sweet even I couldn’t resist it – I had some.

While we finished up our food, the kids and their fathers went off to play with their model aircraft till late in the afternoon.  Then we headed over to the in-laws and had supper there.

Green Food Radio Show

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Entertainment,Food Review,Gadgets,Meet Up With,My Musing | Saturday 5 May 2012 2:31 pm

I was invited recently by a top green food radio show in United States to talk about my blog thru’  audio conferencing with them about food blogging and all about blogging and making money thru’ blogging.   The fans of this green food radio show wanted to know as a food blogger how can one make our passion turn into money.   I was very honored of course but since everyone listening in must loved food and good food, they of course qualify to be a food blogger and as to how to turn your food passion into money, well, that’s even easier.  Like the green food radio show, I too have a following too and the more people read your blog, the more money you will make.  Traffic is the key to all blogs and if you have something they like and want to know about you, well, half the better is already won.  As for the rest, everything will fall into its place.  Our audio conferencing with other food bloggers around the globe was an interesting one, hopefully, they invite me again – the next time they want more tips about making money with food blogs.

Farmer’s Market

Spring is here and I’m hoping that the weather will cooperate with us – so that PB and I with Chloe of course can go to the Farmer’s Market around the county area.  I loved the Farmer’s market so much – because it’s the best place to get all the good food – and home made with the best ingredients.  And as for Chloe she loved all the handicraft made by these very talented and artistic people.  There are some  farm stools we saw last year and we didn’t get them and regretted much – so this time round – we are going to get some for Chloe and her friends. We are also trying to get some lawn chairs – that are hand-painted for our lawn because we are going to be landscaping it this spring.  I look forward to buying all these wonderful things at the Farmer’s Market.

Toaster Oven

Posted by mamabok | Fast Food,Gadgets,Home Essentials,My Musing | Wednesday 14 March 2012 10:20 pm

I haven’t used a toaster oven for years now – and in fact wanted to sell it away.  Lucky for me – I didn’t sell it because instead of using my regular oven for small amount of food – I can now use the toaster oven to bake my fish or even heat up a spring roll.  I find that heating up such a huge oven is a real waste of money – therefore I stopped eating spring rolls altogether – till a girl at the M & M meat shop suggested I use a toaster oven instead – and that was the best advice I listened to.   My good ole toaster oven is in use again.

KitchenAid Cast Iron Pot

Posted by mamabok | Awesome,Gadgets,Kitchen Gadgets,My Musing,Shopping,The Other Half | Monday 2 January 2012 10:10 pm

While other people get diamond rings or a piece of new jewellry – I wanted a KitchenAid Cast Iron Pot for my Christmas this year – that  I’ve been eyeing on it for years now but since it’s on sale I quickly rushed out to get one from Canadian Tire.  Trust a food blogger to ask for an cast iron pot – instead of jewelry.

Yup they had the red color ones but I wanted the purple one – coz’ I’m that special – muahahhaha!!!

So PB paid for it – and we went on our merry way – on Christmas eve!

PS:  Yes! this is a corn zipper ! and the winner is Anthea :)

A Poolside BBQ

Posted by mamabok | BBQ,Canadian,Friendship,Gadgets,General,Health,My Musing,Useful Links,Useful Tips,Vacation | Wednesday 14 September 2011 1:19 pm

This summer we feel so loved because we have been invited to many BBQs and poolside parties and for those who knows me – I love the BBQ and if you tell me there is a BBQ at your home – I’ll be the first to be there.  It’s always nice to have the pool for the kids but you all know that it can get quite chilly here – so most of our friends put in the raypak heat pump great for heating up pools and spa.  Some may think it’s an investment – but if you can be using your pool and spa during the winter – I think it’s a small price to pay.

Lots of non-alcoholic drinks were provided during the poolside bbq – so that the kids can enjoy them as well – and the kids loved to see colorful fruits in their drinks.

Besides the burger – we had other dishes like salad, cheese and finger sandwiches for the kids.

As you can see – we had lots of meat – chloe called it the meat galore – muahahha!

The kids were in loved with the jello.  The bbq lasted till late at night and we even got to take a dip in the evening – thanks to the heat pump – we weren’t freezing like most times.

FlatBread @ Subway

Posted by mamabok | Breakfast,Canadian,Food Review,Gadgets,My Musing,Shopping,Useful Links,Useful Tips,Western | Thursday 14 July 2011 3:24 pm

So we went to Subway for breakfast the other day – and saw something new to try out – of course I didn’t bring my camera with me – since I didn’t think that there was anything new that I hadn’t taken a picture of.  But like any food blogger – how can I resist taking a picture of food that I’ve tried, tasted – and new for the people who visits my blog right?  Thank God for my blackberry curve 8520 – I never leave home with it.   Not only does it work as a phone, it has a GPS built into it and  also lets me take pictures with it – for it has a  built-in 2MP digital camera with 5x digital zoom.  So my blackberry curve saved the day!

The flatbread breakfast combo is but $3 and it comes with coffee!   I had black forest ham with mine.  You can have bacon with yours or a sunrise melt – which I will try the next time.  So how was it?  pretty good and darn filling! and healthy too!  no more MacDonald breakfast – Subway here i come.

A New Toaster That Works

Posted by mamabok | Gadgets,Home Essentials,Kitchen Gadgets,My Musing,Shopping,The Other Half | Tuesday 17 May 2011 8:50 pm

Our old toaster of many, many years decided to give up on us finally – we’ve had the toaster since before I arrived in Canada – it was a white toaster and it never worked right for me.  Normally, we would have to watch the toaster – so it won’t burned the toast.  When we finally bought this one from our local mall – we wanted something that was better since we had a gift card from Zellers from the points we’ve collected for years.   So basically, this toaster was free – hehe!  This toaster can do defrosting, reheating as well as toasting your bagel (woohoo!) – thus far I do like that toaster – but it was a brand that I’m not familiar with – oh well – as long as it works eh.

Blissfully Blessed

Posted by mamabok | Canadian,Friendship,Gadgets,My Musing,The Other Half,Useful Links,Useful Tips | Friday 29 April 2011 2:17 pm

totally blessed

As you all know we spend a lot of time at the store – PB worst ! for spends a lot more hours in the store than I.  But during the weekends when Chloe is at her Grammie’s I get to stay in the store till it closes at 9pm – sometimes even later.  After closing up the store – we head home – long hours with no one at home.  This year we are very blessed – business at the store had been really steady and we have a friend who introduced us to the home automation software for our home – so that we can monitor our home even if we were at work.  And knowing how paranoid I am – PB decided to invest in this software.   I’m a very happy gal now – coz’ I can heat up the home before we go back from the store – real time video that I can watch from the store.  No worries about breaking in – and even if we went on vacation – I don’t have to worry no more nor do I need to get a friend to go by the house everyday.   I’m so blessed!

PS :  I bought my So Blessed coffee cup from downtown – for my birthday!  you like it?

New Dining Chairs

Posted by mamabok | Gadgets,General,Home Essentials,Kitchen,My Musing,Shopping | Thursday 13 January 2011 10:03 pm

We started off the new year with buying new dining chairs – you see – we’ve decided that if we have our meals at home on Sunday – we should make it a habit to eat around the dining table.   We did have chairs – don’t get me wrong – it’s just that we wanted chairs that looked the same and not some mis-matched.   It’s very important to have the dining table and chairs all in the same color – that way – when we do have the extended family over for dinner – at least we have some proper chairs for them to sit on too.

Next to work on some contemporary furniture for Chloe’s room and the basement.  We’ve just bought a new chest of drawers for Chloe as well – together with the dining chairs.  Last year – we did the outdoor patio furnitures – and this year – we have to do Chloe’s new furniture and the basement as well.   But unlike when we first started – when we do buy any furniture or any big items for the house – we will be paying in cash and not a credit card no more.  Credit cards can get evil – especially if you get too busy and miss the month’s payment.

Food Pictures

Posted by mamabok | Food Review,Gadgets,General,My Musing,Useful Links,Useful Tips | Monday 6 December 2010 2:50 pm

I love to take pictures of food – as you all know and I love to post them up – but I also have a bad habit – I do my pictures on my computer – store all of them there – plus I love watching a movie on my computer and I have like games running in the background as well.  PB said – it’s a wonder my computer isn’t crashing – but I also reminded him that he had put in extra computer memory aka ram for me – when I first started on this new computer.   So with this the extra rams – my computer isn’t so sluggish any more.  So remember – storing your photos or movies onto your computer doesn’t really caused the computer to slow down – it’s the running of different programs and having a lot of windows opened at the same time that does.  But it’s easy to fix – and cheap too now – to add on extra memory for your computer.    No more sluggish computer for me – that’s for sure – else I would be banging my head on the desktop – hahahha!!

Chloe’s handicraft – made with Grammie – her ice penguin.

Hosting A Christmas Dinner

Posted by mamabok | Gadgets,General,Kitchen,Kitchen Gadgets,My Musing,Useful Links,Useful Tips | Thursday 4 November 2010 3:04 pm

We have been busy looking for dining chairs of late – but haven`t had any luck so far – finding the right ones at the right price.  Have you seen my kitchen of late?  Yes!  it’s pretty small – an open concept kitchen as they called it – what was I thinking of when I bought this house?

I would have loved my bathroom sink to be like the ones back home  pedestal sinks – why?  easier to clean and a lot less dust trapped around it.   If i had to choose another house again – my kitchen isn’t going to be an open concept one – and definitely need a bigger dining table and lots more chairs – so that I can host any dinner not just Christmas.  Plus more than 1 bathroom – that’s for sure.  So hard to host anything with just one bathroom!  I need a guest bathroom and a master bathroom and a bathroom for Chloe.

So yes! would love to host Christmas dinner at my home this year – but I’ve to really make some changes – more chairs – change the sink in the bathroom and in my plans – is to add another bathroom in the basement.  Oh did I say also a fireplace in the basement?  Yes!  I have so many things I wanna do for our house.

Pink Frying Pan

Posted by mamabok | Amusing/Bizarre,Cooking,Gadgets,Kitchen | Saturday 30 January 2010 12:01 am

So i finally gave in and retired my old breakfast frying pan that I had been using for quite a while now.  The reason for retiring it was because a piece of the coating was gone – so to be safe and not get food poison or anything – i went hunting for a new one.

As you all know .. the only thing i buy on impulse is Chloe’s stuff – even then it had to be a good deal.  So when looking for a breakfast pan – i had to make sure the price was right.  So i saw this the other day at the mall – and it was pink – more my type eh – didn’t cost too much – pretty reasonable – so i bought it.  It wasn’t a Tfal brand but i tried it anyhow – so i wasn’t surprised that it didn’t cook as well as the Tfal brand.  Well, i’ll make do with this one for now – it’s for my hash browns and turkey bacon in the mornings – and an egg sometimes during the week.
